And I used to think my mom is stingy. Yes sure I did...All the time I used to wear skirts made out of my dad's pants, or Kameez made out of dad's shirts. I swear I used to. My school bags were never bought new. They were always stitched by my mother out of an old thick bedsheet. The kind of material it was, the school bag never left me for the next three or four years. So when all my friends had good new school bags made out of plastic or foam, I used to carry this bag made out of cloth.
Doormats were never bought. My mother used to roll a saree in concentric circles and stitch it with oddly placed stitches of different coloured threads. Kitchen towels, and hand towels were always out of some old tablecloth or a dupatta or a shirt or any cloth. I had these friends of mine who used to go to the one and only air conditioned shop in town and buy new doormats, towels etc. I had thought then I would grow up and when I get married would never ever make things at home. I would buy them.
Time passed, I got married and I didnt really have to start the practice of buying. My mom in law anyway was the kind of person who used to buy things from the shop and never was the kind who would take the trouble of making things at least things like doormat and all at home. Carrying a branded plastic cover was like fashion. I continued this kind of life and quite forgot the art of making home made stuff. NOtwithstanding my mom's thrusting things down my life I had inherited the art of making best out of waste from her anyway.
Years passed and I came to Thane and I settled down in the nestles of greenery all over. I met his parents...and I saw him as a small boy of 10 years. Some time later I saw his efforts to keep a cracker free Diwali and his efforts to keep a particular area clean. I was impressed. The Nature Club had begun.
Today, it is continuing ....and their motto hasnt changed. But what has drastically changed is my attitude. What I thought as waste of time by my mother is actually being eco friendly. My mom has all the time been eco friendly and has always practised the art of recycling and reusing...only that no one knew these terms then. Today the kids have endeavoured to make book markers...out of what...? Waste paper..They have envisaged to make many more things out of what..? Waste material...
I am glad they especially the boy and his friends have been instrumental in changing my attitude. They are one of a kind. Even when I offered to put up a banner in the local dandia ...they refused saying that this money could be put up for better activities which are more constructive.
I bow to this generation kids and salute their dedication and having instilled in me the feeling that my mom wasnt stingy. She was just being aware ...and that's their principle...Awareness.
